At the May 1st meeting of the Bergen County School Boards Association, Dr. Joseph Amara of the Bergenfield Board of Education received the 2012 Archie F. Hay Award for Distinguished Service. The award, named after a former county superintendent, is presented annually to a board member who exemplifies outstanding educational leadership. Congratulations Dr. Amara!
The Richardson family attended the First Annual Bergenfield High School Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in honor of Charles Richardson, who lost his life while serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Charles was a two sport letterman, having excelled in basketball and baseball. To keep Charles’ name alive, the family has donated $10,000 in scholarship money to be given in his honor. Top-ranked school districts have been announced in the eighth annual Digital School Districts Survey by the Center for Digital Education, the National School Boards Association (NSBA), and convergemag.com. Bergenfield was ranked number nine in the country among mid-sized student population districts. The survey showcases exemplary school boards’ and districts’ use of technology to govern the district, communicate with students, parents and the community and to improve district operations. Thursday, March 8 was a very special evening for Bergenfield High School as well as the town of Bergenfield. Seeing so many former students, friends, family and community members at the Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony was special for everybody involved. Congratulations to all the inductees! Denise Ponte and Joseph Mastroeni, science teachers at Roy W. Brown Middle School in Bergenfield, N.J., have been named regional winners in the Shell Science Lab Challenge, a competition for middle and high school science teachers. Sponsored by the Shell Oil Company and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the competition encouraged teachers (grades 6-12), who have found innovative ways to deliver quality lab experiences with limited school and laboratory resources, to share their approaches for a chance to win a school science lab makeover support package valued at $20,000.
